U.S. SLAUGHTER PLANTS CLOSED

October 4, 2007

After a series of appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals, the last operating horse slaughter plant in the U.S. has been officially closed down. This follows on the recent closing of plants in Texas and Illinois. The result is that horses will no longer be slaughtered in the United States for human consumption abroad.

This unfortunately does not end the plight of horses to slaughter. Horses continue to be shipped to slaughter plants in Canada and Mexico. They are transported long distances, in horrific conditions. Many are injured along the way or are near death upon arrival. the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act will end transport of horses to slaughter across U.S. borders.

It is important to understand the issues. For a complete overview of this issue and to learn what you can do, please visit Humane Society of the United States website.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary would like to ask our members to write to their political representatives and ask them to support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (HR503/S311). Passage of this legislation will ensure American horses are no longer slaughtered in the U.S., across our borders, or abroad for human consumption. Please contact your House of Representatives and Senators and ask them to support H.R.503 and S311 respectively.
