George at Redwings
In September of 2004, a Monterey County Animal Control Officer found George in a field confined by a short rope rather than traditional stabling. He was very emaciated, with his ribs and pelvis bones clearly defined. He received a body score of 2 on a total score of 9 by a local veterinarian. The only food George had available was a mixture of native grasses in sparse supply.
George’s owner decided to give him up to the Monterey County SPCA. He was given a dental exam, blood work, vaccinations and deworming. Since George was only 11 years old, it was thought he would be easily adopted out. However, during a vet check it was found that he has “Shivers”—a disease that make it impossible for him to be ridden any longer. No one wanted a horse that was unrideable and also had a disease which would probably cause more problems in the future.
After staying at the SPCA for several years, Redwings was contacted and asked if we could take George in and give him a permanent home. Of course we agreed. George is a very friendly horse and is now enjoying the company of his new friends.
