Miz Scarlett

Scarlett’s first week at Redwings

Apparently, Miz Scarlett had been rescued from some sort of abuse by a couple in Contra Costa County.

She is still very timid and definitely shows signs of abuse. The couple had other horses and Miz Scarlett joined them in a pasture.

She and the rest of the herd spent about ten years roaming this pasture. Then the husband became very ill. His medical treatments took most of the money the couple had and the horses (all eight of them) were living on whatever the pasture could provide for them, but it wasn’t much!

The horses became infested with ticks and lice which caused Miz Scarlett to have a fungal skin condition. When their supply of grass dried up and no supplemental hay appeared, they quickly dropped weight.

When Contra Costa Animal Services found the eight horses, they were all in very bad shape—emaciated with rib, tail and hip bones showing.

One was so ill it had to be euthanized. However, once they were cleaned and given good food, five of the younger horses were able to be placed.

Miz Scarlett and another mare were older and had no place to go. The Animal Services Department has no “long term” facility, so they contacted Redwings and asked if we might have room for the two mares. Of course, we made room.

Once Miz Scarlett arrived, she was again treated for her fungal skin condition. After three weeks of treatment, she cleared up and was able to be removed from the quarantine barn to her new and permanent home. She is still fearful of people, but we’re sure she will quickly learn only good things will happen to her in her new home.
